Where’s Waldo 100km – USATF 100km Masters

Where’s Waldo 100KHi Ultrarunners,

We are pleased to announce that Where’s Waldo has been selected to be the 2007 National USATF 100K Masters Trail Championship. There will be USATF awards for over 40 age groups and $4200 in prize money provided by Sunsweet for masters athletes. Race date is August 18, 2007.

After wheeling the course twice we have a few course changes in store to get the mileage closer to 62 miles (down from 66.4). These changes will be official pending Forest Service approval (they are reviewing them now). The primary difference is a new start which will go up the ski area instead of following the PCT (it’s shorter but steeper). After leaving the ski area, we’ll be on a single track trail known as the Skyline Trail. This gets us to the Gold Lake Aid Station in about 7 miles instead of 10. The other change is that we will not be summiting the Twins. These changes should take between 30 minutes to an hour off finishing times.

There will still be an early start (3:00 am), but with 4 miles chopped off the course not as many runners will need to take it. The regular start remains at 5:00 am. Cutoffs will be the same and you must finish by 9:00pm to get a Sporthill hat.

Now that the course is “easy” and our limit is only 125 runners, the relay will be discontinued. For those of you who wanted to do the relay this year, we’re sorry. Maybe it is time to step up and do the whole thing? This will also make it easier for our 130 volunteers, the spectators, and the runners to follow the race.

Along with the USATF awards and prize money, we’ll still have our unique Find Waldo and Wet Waldo awards. New this year will be the “Show Us Your Waldo” award. This can be interpreted anyway you want, but each aid station will get one vote for the runner that shows the most or best Waldo. Outright bribery in the form of backrubs and baby wipes for the volunteers might get you their votes.

Applications will be available online on March 1. Early entry is $80 until June 1, 2007, $100 until August 1, 2007.
