The Fremont 50K was held last Saturday, 1/27, beginning and ending at Quarry Lakes Regional Park in Fremont. The course went along the Alameda Creek Trail to Coyote Hills Regional Park beside the Pacific Ocean for a couple of loops and returned to Quarry Lakes. It is a road 50K, about as flat as they can get in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Catra Corbett, Jerry Roninger, Captain Kirk, and I (along with some other runners) have been in the process of designing this course over the past couple of years. Last year Catra and even ran it while it was hailing. Saturday’s run was a final “market test” of the course before starting the process of making it into an official race for next winter.
About 20 runners participated. One runner pointed out to me that 10% of the runners were finishers of the Hardrock 100: Zack Grossman and Kirk Boisseree. I noted the same percentage of Badwater finishers in the group: Linda McFadden and Barb Elia. (Zack finished fourth at Hardrock; Linda finished second at Badwater.)
Chihping Fu ran to and from Quarry Lakes, and did the course, for a total of about 33 miles. If he had run the course alone he would have finished in around 5 hours.
We were honored to have this event be Michelle Rowe’s debut at the ultra marathon distance. She happily finished her first 50k looking like she could go out for another 50K–or more. Badwater or Hardrock is most definitely in her future.
