Middelburg – Athletes who complete the Loskop Marathon this year will all get a 1.5kg pocket of export quality oranges.
Several thousand runners are expected to participate in the 50km race in and around Middelburg in Mpumalanga on April 21.
For the first time this year, runners will also be able to compete in a 21.1km half-marathon.
The co-ordinator of the marathon, Bradley Brouwer, said all competitors who finished both events would be given pockets of oranges to boost their vitamin C and energy levels.
“Athletes who participated in the marathon over five years ago will remember receiving a traditional bag of oranges at the finishing point,” said Brouwer.
“We are re-introducing the tradition this year and believe it is yet another benefit associated with our event,” he said.
Brouwer said the 50km ultra marathon was a Comrades Marathon-qualifying event, and would offer athletes “a challenging route, outstanding water points, a thrilling atmosphere and a remarkable finish at Forever Resorts at Loskop Dam”.
Both the marathon and the 21.1km race will start at the Middelburg municipal offices in Wanderers Street at 07:00.
Entries close on April 2 and can be processed via the official race website: www.loskopmarathon.co.za. Entry forms will also be available at all leading sports stores
