English Bobby to run at Comrades

A police officer from Biggleswade is to put his fitness to the greatest test by running one of the world’s toughest races.
Dc Barry Onwuchekwa will join six other colleagues from Bedfordshire police when they jet off to South Africa on June 17 to compete in the gruelling 56-mile race called the Comrades Marathon.
The team is currently undertaking an arduous six-month training programme which includes a qualifying marathon.
Dc Onwuchekwa has a passion for running, like his colleagues who are hoping to raise £10,000 for Keech Cottage Children’s Hospice near Luton.
The race runs from Pietermaritzburg in the Zulu province of KwaZulu-Natal on the south east coast of South Africa to the Sahara Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in Durban.
The officers are paying for their own fare and accommodation costs and will endure sub-tropical conditions, dusty tracks, wildlife and pass through the wilds of the Drakensberg Mountains in what is described as the ultimate human race.
