World Masters Athletics 100 km World Championship
March 10, 2007 — planetultramarathonall for Masters Ultrarunners -
If you are a US masters-age ultrarunner who is interested in competing
in the 2007 WMA 100K World Championship, I want you to know about an
exciting opportunity for masters ultrarunners to race in a World
Championship event. The 2007 WMA 100K Championship will be held in
Winschoten, Netherlands on September 8, 2007.
USATF encourages American masters ultrarunners to compete for world
age-group recognition at this venue and to provide a broad US masters
presence at this World Championship. At the last WMA 100K World
Championship, held in Argentina in 2005, the USA Masters 100K Team
brought home 9 medals including the individual gold in the men’s and
women race. This year the WMA 100K WC race will be held in conjunction
with the IAU 100K World Cup, the Dutch National Championship 100K, and
the European Championship 100K. The race is held on the very fast
Winschoten course that has been the site of many World and European
Championships in the past.
The Masters LDR Committee of USATF endorses the 2007 Masters 100K team
and would like to field a team consisting of athletes representing as
many age-groups as possible. At WMA championships, including the 100K
event, men and women age 35+ compete in the standard 5-year age-groups.
There are no qualifying standards for US team members other than masters
status, US citizenship, and USATF membership.
As with all WMA events at which USATF fields a team, there is no funding
for the Masters 100K team. US Masters ultrarunners who compete in the
WMA 100K race are responsible for their own race entry, travel, and
lodging expenses. The logistics of team entry, travel, lodging, and
uniforms is coordinated by the Team Leader and Masters Ultrarunning
Representative Lorraine Gersitz to ensure a great US team experience for
all involved. Team members can also use the resources of the
International Masters Athletes Foundation (IMAF) a non-profit
organization created to raise funds for masters athletes.
