Bangalore: The Limca Book of Records 2006 calls Padma Subbaraya and Kiran Karadi the “First Ultra Marathon couple”. The pair, software professionals, has participated in 17 marathons and eight ultra marathons. It holds the national record for the running in the highest number of marathons and ultra marathons together.

Mr. Karadi told presspersons that his wife holds the national record for having participated in 15 marathons and three ultra marathons between 2002 and 2006. Recently, she completed 160 km by running continuously for 29 hours and 40 minutes on February 3 and February 4 at Houston, Texas, U.S. In the process, she became the first Indian woman to have run 160 km.

Ms. Subbaraya said that she and her husband started their marathon training with Team Asha, of Asha for Education.

They participated in their first marathon at Maui, Hawaii. While Mr. Karadi has run 17 marathons, eight ultra marathons and two triathlons, Ms. Subbaraya has run 21 marathons, 10 ultra marathons and two triathlons. “By participating in such events, we want to promote the cause of education of the underprivileged,” said Ms. Subbaraya.
