Centurion USA 2007
Saturday June 2 - Sunday June 3, 2007

In cooperation with the 18th Annual FANS 24 Hour Run, the Centurion USA 2007 walk will be held on Saturday June 2, starting at 8am thru Sunday June 3 at 8am. Race Walk Minnesota is providing the walking judges and FANS is providing a well organized walking and running event with a long history in the ultra community. Read the September 2006 Ultrarunning article about FANS here.

What is a Centurion? It is walking 100 miles within 24 hours.

The race director for FANS approved adding the Centurion USA 2007 walking event on these conditions: the entry and race procedures do not change from the point-of-view of the race staff, and that the walking judges communicate only with walkers attempting a Centurion. There are no additions to the FANS website this year mentioning the Centurion USA 2007 walk.

So, here is how it works:

Enter the FANS 24 hour event as a walker. Here are direct links to the Entry Form and Race Information. FANS supports a local charity providing college scholarships to inner city youth, so you can enter the event by collecting pledges as well. See the FANS website for details on this option.
Send an e-mail to Bruce Leasure - racewalk-mn@comcast.net - and say you are attempting a Centurion. On race day, there will be an opportunity to signup for the Centurion prior to the start, but we would like to know ahead of time so we can have enough awards, and so we can keep the race director informed.
USATF/MN and Twin Cities Race Walkers provides walking judges for the 24 hours. The judges will change during the 24 hours, but there will always be one or two on the course.
The judges will only be looking for violations of the continuous contact rule. There will be no judging of race walking’s other form rule - the straight leg rule.
When a judge notices that you are violating the continuous contact rule, or are close enough to violating it that you are making them nervous, they will tell you, giving you an opportunity to correct the situation.
A walker attempting a Centurion will be disqualified (DQed) from receiving a Centurion award by the judges only if there is a significant infraction of the continuous contact rule. Blatant running or jogging is a significant infraction. Slowing down and regaining continuous contact after a judge talks with you about be slightly away from continuous contact is not a significant infraction, though several such events become significant. The judge’s rule is final, and cannot be appealed. DQed walkers will be told as soon as possible.
DQed walkers are still eligible for FANS walking awards, as FANS works on an honor system for the walking division. FANS walking awards will not change
Centurion USA 2007 awards will be given at the FANS awards ceremony, shortly after 8am on Sunday. These awards include: Ulli Kamm Award for completing 100km but not making it to 100 miles and the Joe Duncan Award for completing 100 or more miles.
