I have been approached by the historical society of Meyersdale, Somerset
County, PA, since my father in-law lives there, and I have a reputation
as some sort of eccentric who runs long distances. The town would like
to christen the recently completed section of the Great Allegheny
Passage that connects Frostburg, MD to the PA section. It’s a rail
right-of-way, rather than a trail of a more challenging sort.=20
Is there anyone on the list who lives in or around the Laurel Highlands
or in W.MD who could assist this small town? I am going to have them
contact the Ruritan Club in Yellow Springs, WV, which puts on a very
successful race each May to raise money for the club. That club started
the race without any direct runner involvement, and it’s been very well
run throughout its short life. Meyersdale may have to do the same thing.
They’re thinking of an early summer race next year.
There are some lovely sections of the trail with terrific views. For
those familiar with the area, I was thinking a point-to-point starting
in Frostburg and finishing in Meyersdale (about 16 miles) would be
feasible. Thoughts?
