My consulting company educates about 100 Physicians a year to better understand the metabolism of endurance athletes. I was a triathlete in 1983 attached to the swat team when my Heart when into A fib the Cardiologists were baffeled ,, well now Im in partnership with the best research labs in the country and what to share that research with your team 407-342-6043
A running friend of William Russ Scala went to a cardiologist, who decided his symptoms indicated the need for a pacemaker, which was surgically implanted.
The friend had a magnesium imbalance, said Scala, founder of the Institute of Nutritional Medicine & Cardiovascular Research in Orlando, Fla. The surgery was not needed.
“If he would have waited a few days the situation would have taken care of itself,” said Scala.
Another problem that has cropped up is prescriptions of antidepressants for athletes who appear to be coping with depression when in fact their training has altered their body chemistry.
“Endurance athletes really have no one to turn to when they get chemically overtrained,” Scala said. “Antidepressants are not the answer.”
These are just two of examples of the unique medical circumstances facing athletes, Scala said, who has dedicated himself to both researching and disseminating information to help people and their physicians make more informed decisions.
Scala has set up a Website to educate runners “so they can educate their physicians when a problem arises,” he said. “We are in partnership with the best research labs in the country.”

Thanks for the info…This is one of the things that our sports (endurance) really need. From my experience, there is a distinct lack of knowledge when it comes to the physiology of our sports…even when I go to the local sports medicine doctors, they seem kind of clueless about ultra running.
Would you or someone at your firm be interested in submitting a monthly topic article regarding current issues in endurance medicine. If so, please email me at j.shearer@yahoo.com and get me more information. I would love to expand our medical topics.
