Cyclists gear up for Amashovashova

Original storyCycling enthusiasts from around the country are gearing up for the 21st staging of the Pick ‘n Pay Amashovashova National Classic from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on October 20-21.With the full support of the eThekwini municipality, the Amashova which takes place principally on the same route as the Comrades Marathon enjoys full road closure for the duration of the event.Cyclists from around the country are encouraged to register now for the following events, starting off with the two new 45km and 20km Asishove Mountain Bike events introduced for “mountain bikers” on Saturday, October 20 at Giba Gorge just outside Hillcrest.Later that afternoon in Willow Tree Lane, on the north side of the Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World starting at 4pm there will be two mini shova events for children.There is limited space for bookings but plenty of lucky draw prizes and goodie-bags will be up for grabs including a birthday party valued at R10 000 courtesy of Pick ‘n Pay and eight Raleigh bicycles courtesy of Spur.Sunday is the highlight for the Shova festivities – the 106km race starting at 6am outside the Pietermaritzburg City Hall, and for the East Coast Radio 40km Family Fun Ride starting at the same time outside the Pick ‘n Pay in Hillcrest.To enter go to or call the Shova team at 031-312-8896.
