Official Way Too Cool results
Dear Listers —
The Way Too Cool 50K Presented by GU Sports — the fourth event in the
Montrail Ultra Cup Series — results are available at
http://www.capitalroadrace.com/results08.html. A stellar field of many
of the best ultradistance runners in the United States entered this
year, vying for a Montrail Ultra Cup spot in the Western States 100.
Good weather, excellent trail conditions, dedicated volunteers and
arguably the most competitive 50K field in the history of trail running
made for an exciting day. Under ideal conditions we would typically
expect 8 to 10 runners to cross the finish line under the 4-hour
barrier. This year, an amazing 25 men and one woman broke the magic
barrier. The most dominating force in women’s ultrarunning, Ann Trason,
was the only woman to ever break 4 hours on this moderately difficult
course, just squeaking in with a 3:59:32 in 1993. There had been
several attempts and a few close calls, but it took another 15 years
before it happened again. Susannah Beck, 39, from Eugene, OR, destroyed
Ann’s course record by more than 4 minutes with a time of 3:55:22. Todd
Braje, 31, of Eugene, OR, won the event with a solid showing of 3:32.
Young Mr. Erik Skaggs, 22, of Ashland, OR, after taking the early lead,
held on to second with a time of 3:34 (new age-group record), followed
closely by Dan Olmstead, 36, of Eugene, OR, with a time of 3:35 (new
age-group record). Notably, Scott Jurek, 34, of Seattle, WA, surprised
himself by running a Way Too Cool PR and arriving at the finish line 4
seconds behind Olmstead. One couldn’t help but notice a trend here.
It’s apparent that the folks in Oregon take their trail running
seriously. The ever tough Beverly Anderson-Abbs, 43, of Red Bluff, CA,
placed second in the women’s race with a time of 4:07 (new age-group
record), and Joelle Vaught, 33, of Boise, ID, and a past Way Too Cool
winner, finished third with a time of 4:10 (new age-group record). A
total of 459 runners started, and 442 finished for a 96% finishing rate.
Eight age-group records changed hands. Top-10 men and women results
are below.
