Darin Bentley to run the Spartathlon

Next month, less than five weeks after he completed the grueling Canadian Death Race – which comes by its name honestly – Darin Bentley will face an even tougher challenge when he retraces a 246-km route steeped in Greek myth and history.

Bentley will be in Greece Sept. 26 for Spartathlon, a 25-year-old ultra-marathon between Athens and Sparta that replicates the route travelled by Greek messenger Pheidippides, who – at least according to ancient lore – ran more than 240 kilometres in two days to request help from Sparta when the Persian army invaded the Greek town of Marathon.

“It’s kind of like the movie 300. In Sparta, they’ve got this big statue of King Leonides, who was in that movie,” said Bentley, a Crescent Beach resident and firefighter in Fleetwood.
