Closing date for Comrades brought forward

THE change of date of the 2009 Comrades Marathon to May 24 means Comrades runners will have to be sharper on their feet over the next nine months as the closing dates for entries has been brought forward to March 31 2009, and will not be extended.

The Comrades date was changed in order to avoid the fixtures and celebrations around next year’s Confederations Cup soccer tournament.

With many of the traditional qualifying races, including Two Oceans Marathon only being held after this date, the Comrades Marathon Association are initiating a system to allow runners to enter before qualifying and then they have an additional four weeks until April 28 to submit proof of qualification.

“While all entries will have to be in by March 31, 2009, runners will still be allowed to qualify in official qualifying races during the month of April, with April 28 as the final cut-off,” explained race director Renee Jordaan.

“Upon qualification, runners simply need to give the time and details of the qualifying race through to the CMA office. We will accept the qualification details in a number of formats and these will be explained on the entry form.”

The entry forms will be available in January. — Sapa
