P.A.C.E. TREK UPDATE – You can also read this online and listen to an audio update at http://www.pacetrek.com/journal.htm The Alaska adventure begins in 50 days!

In about 6 weeks I’ll be boarding an airplane in Missoula, Montana heading for Juneau, Alaska – the location where P.A.C.E. Trek 2009 will begin (details at http://www.pacetrek.com). The Mendenhall Glacier will be the backdrop to the start of the 500-mile Alaska journey and Juneau is the town from which I graduated high school in 1983. I’ll be spending a few days in Juneau with an old high school track buddy – Scott Miller. He and his family have agreed to take in this stroller-pushing, ultra-marathon guy from April 18-21. Currently, there are 8,267 students registered to take part in P.A.C.E. Trek. There are still 6 weeks for schools to register teams and it’s great to already have more kids signed up than we had for last year’s trek across Montana!

As of today there are teams from 23 U.S. states as well as Australia, Germany, Japan, Malaysia and Scotland. For the kids who like to visit the Game Section of the web site, you’ll be happy to learn that I’ve added a few new games. Be sure to check it out! Also, I’ve added a page to the site of music slideshows and news report videos from previous P.A.C.E. journeys. You can see that page by clicking here! P.A.C.E. Trek has teamed up with our friends at Youth Runner magazine to provide school physical education programs with a chance to win $500.00! We all know that school P.E. departments don’t receive enough funding, so this is an opportunity for a school to win $500 by participating in, and actually completing, P.A.C.E. Trek 2009.

The rules: § Register for free at least one school team to participate in P.A.C.E. Trek; § Have your team run/walk with Paul between April 20 and May 12, 2009; § Report your school’s progress during the trek via the Team Login section; and, § Complete the 500-mile trek by 6:00 p.m., PST, on Tuesday, May 12, 2009. Each school’s team leader MUST enter the Team Login section of the web site and report that at least one of their school’s registered teams has completed at least 500 miles by 6:00 p.m., PST, on May 12, 2009 in order to be entered into the drawing for the $500.00 award. I will draw the winning school’s name on May 13, 2009 during a drawing from all of the registered schools reporting by the deadline that they have finished the P.A.C.E. Trek 500-mile Alaska challenge. The winning school will be announced on the pacetrek.com web site following the drawing. Only one school will win the $500.00 “P.A.C.E. Healthy School Award”. Also, a school can only have its name entered once into the drawing. The odds of winning the $500.00 award depend on how many registered schools actually complete the trek on or before May 12, 2009. Click here for complete details! Dan Kesterson, Editor of Youth Runner magazine, will award a check for $500.00 to the winning school to benefit that school’s physical education department.

Youth Runner magazine features an array of kids, youth and high school running events, results and profiles. Read athlete stories, interviews with Olympians, training tips from top coaches, and much more. It is an excellent resource for keeping up on the youth running scene. Be sure to subscribe to their awesome digital magazine! You get 10 issues for just $13.95! Run over to their web site today at Youthrunner.com, and drop Dan a note of appreciation for sponsoring the $500.00 “P.A.C.E. Healthy School Award”. On February 28 I sent to all team leaders the password to enter the “Team Login” section of the P.A.C.E. web site. If you are a team leader and did not receive the password, please contact me! Okay… yet another selfish plug…

PLEASE send the http://www.pacetrek.com web site link to an educator you know. Remember, this virtual trek is FREE for all school teams (public or private). There’s NO fundraising involved and there’s NOTHING anyone has to purchase. Also, adults can participate in the Alaska adventure by signing up teams at stepthere.com.
