News Flash (31st January 2010): In a fantastic development for Irish ultra running, UltraRunning Ireland was awarded the World 50km Trophy Final (2010) and the World Trail Championships (2011). The decision was made at an IAU Executive Council Meeting at IAAF headquarters in Monaco.
The World 50km Trophy Final will be held in conjunction with a new Galway City Marathon on 29 August 2010. Meanwhile, the World Trail Championships will be held in association with another new Irish race, Wild Ireland Run, in July 2011.
Participants in the upcoming World 50km Trophy Final must qualify from a series of races around the globe and are entered by their national federations. The World Trail Championships will take place in Connemara over a distance of 45-50 miles and will also be an open event.
Both of these exciting races will be launched in the coming weeks and are operated by Galway brothers Paul and Richard Donovan. Paul is a two-time Olympian, world indoor medallist, sub 4-minute miler and multiple American NCAA champion. Richard is an international ultra runner, Chairman of UltraRunning Ireland, and Race Director at last year’s Anglo Celtic Plate 100km and Commonwealth Championships 100km.
The success of the applications is a very positive development for ultra running in Ireland. Full details and related websites will be available in mid-February.
