Time for World Solo Run body?

Posted on June 22, 2010 by

I have been involved with Ultrarunning for over twenty years now and in that time I have been very fascinated by the exploits of  Solo Runners and Walkers achieving their exploits across the Globe.  That fascination has led me to becoming good friends with several Solo Runners over the last few years who have also asked me for advice and help over the years.

As we know, the IAU and most National Ultra groups do not recognise the achievements of Solo Ultra runners in any form. This is because they are essentially very hard to prove. It has been left to Guiness to essentally be the ratifying body for Solo Running and occasionally they dont get it right!

Is it time for a World Body to be formed to override the acievment of Solo Runs and Walks in any form?  ( similar to the model used in Solo Yachting). The body would have to determine what constitutes a genuine Solo run, how should they be recorded to prove that they are genuine, what records should be kept for solo running and hopefully become the ratifying body for Solo Ultra Runs and Walks.  A World Body would stop  the runners on occasions that make up their own records for the sake of publicity and would stop the non-genuine  solo runs from being recognised with their sub-par efforts.

I am willing to become part of that World Body if it is formed, but would like to see half a dozen other people from around the Ultra community put their hand up to be involved. There would be a lot of work to be done prior to standing up as an official body, but if that sounds like you, please leave a comment here or drop me a line at pandbessam @ bigpond . com

Thanks and regards
