Rob Apple’s perfect plan

Posted on March 18, 2009 by

Hello to all…Phil asked for a few of us to become posting editors on the site, so I thought it would be fun to add some excerpts from my blog www.mastercompetitor.blogspot.com.

I’ve been trudging along on the ultra trails since the Mountain Masochist 50-mile in 1988. There’s much to be said about those of us who keep on keeping on into our 50’s.

So I’ll add a post or two…here’s my latest. Thanks, and more to come.

Rob Apple has run over 500 ultradistance races.

I first bumped into Rob at a trail race over 20 years ago. I can’t really remember when or where, but we have had some great talks along the way. In addition to running Rob and I both share a love for motorcycle motocross racing, so there are many stories to tell.

Rob is the master of consistency. He races approximately 30 times a year and has now gone international, competing abroad with his partner Susan. I love to get Rob’s emails, getting the facts on some new excursion or road trip to a far away place.

Where I might complete several ultras each year, Rob and Susan complete dozens.

I checked in with Rob regarding his daily training. He lives in Murfreesboro. TN, where a paved and flat greenway is located behind his apartment. Rob commutes early to work, finishes his day (as an accountant) and then arrives back home to knock out his daily 10-miler. Rob connects the greenway to the Stones River Battlefield where ” the scenery is always changing. Wildflowers, wild life and people in general are different daily.”

He wraps up around 6 pm, does a routine with push ups and sit ups and also is a big advocate for icing his legs and feet. Then it’s time for a few beers, a light dinner and lights out at 9 pm. He’s up at 5 am the next day to do it all over again.

The running and fitness lifestyle has been good for Rob; I enjoy his friendship and constant example of how master competitors everywhere can live and love the endurance lifestyle.
